Students explore the latest STEM careers – the science and the scientists – through videos, research and discussion.

The STEM Careers Packs aim to make students aware of the wide variety of STEM careers. They help students understand the importance of scientific knowledge, how science influences society, and how society influences science (i.e. Science as a Human Endeavour).

During their explorations, students will appreciate how the different areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics interact and are interdependent, whilst developing STEM literacies and competencies.

In STEM Pack 3: Bringing Mining and Geology to Life, students learn broadly about jobs in the mining industry.

They will also consider and appreciate the role of mining in our everyday lives and how mining influences science, engineering, technological research, and the environment.

In conjunction with the tasks in this pack, students could investigate the science behind what is mined (such as copper), how these materials are processed and how they are used in everyday products such as electronics.

This which would map to areas of the Chemical Sciences (Year 7 (ACSSU113), Year 8 (ACSSU151) (ACSSU152(ACSSU225), Year 9 (ACSSU177) (ACSSU178(ACSSU179)) and Earth and Space Sciences (Year 7 (ACSSU116) Year 8 (ACSSU153) Year 9 (ACSSU180)) under the ‘Science Understanding’ strand.

All tasks in this pack are mapped to Science as a Human Endeavour as well as the core capabilities within the Australian National Curriculum.
