Wetlands and water catchments play an important role in health of Australia’s coastal marine ecosystems. In Queensland, the ability to regulate runoff from urban, industrial and agricultural activities onto coastal marine environments plays a major role in ensuring the health of the Great Barrier Reef. Researchers like Dr Mark Bayley are actively engaging with rural communities to help them create natural, low tech solutions to farm runoff close to the source, providing a local solution to a national problem.
