This week: Gravity for year 7 and 10 students studying Physical Sciences.

Australian Curriculum Codes: ACSSU117, ACSSU229

Year 7: “Change to an object’s motion is caused by unbalanced forces, including Earth’s gravitational attraction, acting on the object”

  • exploring how gravity affects objects on the surface of Earth
  • considering how gravity keeps planets in orbit around the sun

Year 10: “The motion of objects can be described and predicted using the laws of physics”

  • gathering data to analyse everyday motions produced by forces, such as measurements of distance and time, speed, force, mass and acceleration
  • using Newton’s Second Law to predict how a force affects the movement of an object

Senior Secondary Science (Physics):

  • Unit 2: Linear Motion and Waves
  • Unit 3: Gravity and electromagnetism

This resource may be useful for students in Senior Secondary looking to secure their basic knowledge and understanding before digging deeper.

Each article should take around 5 minutes to read and activities should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this activity:

All must: State the difference between weight and mass and use an appropriate relationship to calculate weight, mass and gravity. (ACSSU117)

Most should: Predict what might happen to their weight in different situations on Earth and in space. (ACSSU117)

Some could: Plan and conduct an experiment the proves acceleration due to gravity and perform calculations involving the equations of motion. (ACSSU229)

Consider which of the above learning outcomes you should be aiming for throughout this activity.
